The Kickoff

Scene. Shared experience. Hidden invoice + existential threat.

What it contains

The conference room. Good coffee. Pastries on trays. CEO on stage, blazer no tie, expensive sneakers. Slides with single words: Transform. Accelerate. AI-First. "This is the year." The language pours out — democratize, augment, empower, agentic — intoxicating and completely free of meaning. The energy is real. People lean forward. People text their teams.

Then back at your desk. Here is what they actually asked you to do: become a process expert, business analyst, consultant, systems thinker, PRD author, root cause analyst, value stream mapper. With no training. No job description change. No acknowledgment.

The hidden invoice. The fine print they forgot to put on the slide. The contract you didn't know you were signing when you clapped.

Organizations are terrible at change. Always have been. The people in that room had lived through digital transformation, Agile, cloud migration. They knew the rhythm: big announcement, vendor selection, training, sponsor reassigned, budget reduced, next year's announcement. They clapped anyway.

But this time the threat is existential. If I don't figure this out, my job might not exist. You cannot say that at the mic. But it's in the room. Three things held at once: excitement, invisible job description, quiet terror.

The surprise is not that people froze. The surprise is that anyone moved.
